Jeremiah 16:6

Both the great and the small shall die in this land: they shall not be buried, neither shall men lament for them, nor cut themselves, nor make themselves bald for them:

The verse stands amid warnings about wilfulness and the punishment soon to come through Babylon. It declares judgment on Judah that persons of every rank, both great and small, shall die in the land. Those who die shall go unburied and be denied the customary mourning rites of lamentation and bodily signs of grief such as cutting the flesh and making bald.

It is a clear and awful denunciation against sin, born of sorrow of heart over transgression, that touchingly appeals for return to God. The mass of the people fail to heed that appeal to return.
