Jeremiah 17:11
As the partridge sitteth on eggs, and hatcheth them not; so he that getteth riches, and not by right, shall leave them in the midst of his days, and at his end shall be a fool. As the partridge sitteth on eggs, and hatcheth them not; so he that getteth riches, and not by right, shall leave them in the midst of his days, and at his end shall be a fool.
Unjustly gained riches are like eggs on which a partridge sits without hatching them, eggs that do not belong to it and bring it no lasting gain, so they will not remain with the one who gathered them. What is gotten by wrong and unjust means does not last, but is abandoned and lost in the midst of life, before life ends. The wealth leaves the one who got it while days still continue, and is left behind in the middle of those days rather than kept to the end.
The one who got such riches ends as a fool, exposed as such when all is seen. That foolish end follows the early loss, for the gain is cut off in midlife and folly is what remains at the last. This warning belongs with the teaching that the Lord searches the heart and repays each person according to ways and deeds and conduct. The searching of the heart and the giving to each according to ways and the fruit of doings is the ground on which the unjust getter is judged and loses all.
