Jeremiah 17:24
And it shall come to pass, if ye diligently hearken unto me, saith the LORD, to bring in no burden through the gates of this city on the sabbath day, but hallow the sabbath day, to do no work therein; And it shall come to pass, if ye diligently hearken unto me, saith the LORD, to bring in no burden through the gates of this city on the sabbath day, but hallow the sabbath day, to do no work therein;
Jerusalem's future was made conditional on diligently hearkening to God and remaining faithful to Him, with its prosperity tied to obedient listening. The obedience required centered on hallowing the Sabbath day by bringing no burden through the gates of the city. Hallowing the Sabbath also meant doing no work in it, setting aside ordinary secular work and not pursuing it on that day. Keeping the Sabbath in this way expressed allegiance to God and His law and to heaven.
Diligent obedience carried the promise that Jerusalem would prosper, endure and remain the chosen city, standing forever as God's elect. Its kings and people would continue to enter it. Refusal to hallow the Sabbath brought the warning that fire would consume the city's gates and palaces.
