Jeremiah 17:4
And thou, even thyself, shalt discontinue from thine heritage that I gave thee; and I will cause thee to serve thine enemies in the land which thou knowest not: for ye have kindled a fire in mine anger, which shall burn for ever. And thou, even thyself, shalt discontinue from thine heritage that I gave thee; and I will cause thee to serve thine enemies in the land which thou knowest not: for ye have kindled a fire in mine anger, which shall burn for ever.
To discontinue from the heritage meant that Judah would forfeit by sin the inheritance God Himself had given, losing possession of their own land. To serve enemies in a land not known meant being carried away to serve their conquerors in a strange and unfamiliar country. The fire kindled in anger meant that their idolatry had provoked divine anger and thereby brought judgment upon them. The declaration stands as a warning that wickedness does not escape reckoning before God, with special accountability resting upon those entrusted with positions of trust.
