Jeremiah 18:17
I will scatter them as with an east wind before the enemy; I will shew them the back, and not the face, in the day of their calamity. I will scatter them as with an east wind before the enemy; I will shew them the back, and not the face, in the day of their calamity.
When Jerusalem, even those who are God's own people, follow their own counsel rather than His, forsake Him, and persist in walking in evil, He will scatter them before their enemies as with a driving east wind. In the day of calamity that follows such persistence He will show them His back and not His face, turning away instead of delivering them. This scattering and turning away is not unconditional but depends on the course pursued, so a nation that turns from its sin may be spared. Nor can the virtues of ancestors serve as a protection, for descendants who themselves choose evil come under the same judgment despite the faithfulness of those who went before them.
