Jeremiah 19:15
Thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel; Behold, I will bring upon this city and upon all her towns all the evil that I have pronounced against it, because they have hardened their necks, that they might not hear my words. Thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel; Behold, I will bring upon this city and upon all her towns all the evil that I have pronounced against it, because they have hardened their necks, that they might not hear my words.
Jeremiah delivered this warning while standing in the court of the temple in the hearing of all the people, after first taking the elders of the people and the priests out to the Valley of the Son of Hinnom. There he dashed a potter's earthen bottle to pieces before them as a sign that God would so break Jerusalem beyond repair. Returning to the temple court, he then pronounced the sentence upon the city and its towns in the words of this verse.
Its meaning is that the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel, would bring upon Jerusalem and upon all her towns every calamity He had pronounced against it. The stated cause was that the people had hardened their necks and would not listen to His words. The message was joined to visible illustrations because, though the sentence of doom had been clearly pronounced, its awful import could scarcely be understood. God therefore added the object lesson of the broken vessel to make a deeper impression of the swift-coming judgment.
