Jeremiah 19:5 stands within the prophet's warning over Judah's turning away from God and the judgment that was coming upon the nation. That judgment was to be swift and final, pictured as an earthen bottle broken so completely that it could not be made whole again. It was to fall upon Jerusalem and its surrounding towns. The cause was that the people had hardened themselves against God's words.
