Can a maid forget her ornaments, or a bride her attire? yet my people have forgotten me days without number.
Forgetting God is as striking and unnatural as a maid forgetting her ornaments or a bride forgetting her attire, for they remember and value their personal ornaments and clothing yet forget Him. The contrast shows how deeply His people have forgotten Him. That forgetting has lasted days without number, a long time for many days.
They have forgotten Him repeatedly despite His mercy and loving-kindness toward them. It is folly to prefer earthly things that glitter over His gift of eternal life.
The warning applies to those who prize gold, silver, and diamonds above Christ, the pearl of great price. It applies likewise to those who neglect the salvation found in God and value wealth, outward adornment, or other things above Christ. In so doing they prize those things above Him in whom the pearl is found.
