Jeremiah 2:8

The priests said not, Where is the LORD? and they that handle the law knew me not: the pastors also transgressed against me, and the prophets prophesied by Baal, and walked after things that do not profit.

The verse is a rebuke of Israel's religious leadership for failing to seek the Lord and to know Him. Those entrusted with handling the law did not know God, the shepherds transgressed against Him, and the prophets spoke by Baal and pursued things that bring no profit. The same description also exposes a present pattern of turning away from God. In that pattern people conform themselves to the spirit of the world and act contrary to the light and direction God has given.
