Jeremiah 22:6
For thus saith the LORD unto the king’s house of Judah; Thou art Gilead unto me, and the head of Lebanon: yet surely I will make thee a wilderness, and cities which are not inhabited. For thus saith the LORD unto the king’s house of Judah; Thou art Gilead unto me, and the head of Lebanon: yet surely I will make thee a wilderness, and cities which are not inhabited.
In the unfolding of Jeremiah's work in Judah, chapter 22 follows directly upon chapter 20 and comes before chapters 23, 25, 26 and the rest, even though the chapters from chapter 20 onward are not arranged in chronological order in the book. The word was spoken to the king's house of Judah after the reign of Josiah. It stands within Jeremiah's record of the sorrowful state of Judah that moved him to weeping, a time marked by false prophets, complete casting aside of the law of God and the principles of righteousness, and persecutions raised against Jeremiah himself.
Although the royal house was to the Lord as Gilead and as the head of Lebanon, He would certainly turn it into a wilderness and its cities into places without inhabitants, so that the royal house and the land lay under coming desolation. That desolation brought the people to the point where they could no longer keep the year of release or the Jubilee. The record remains to display the dreadful greatness of sin and the certainty of its results.
