Jeremiah 23:12

Wherefore their way shall be unto them as slippery ways in the darkness: they shall be driven on, and fall therein: for I will bring evil upon them, even the year of their visitation, saith the LORD.

Their way becomes like slippery paths in darkness because they turn aside from God's word to walk in deceptive, humanly devised ways. They neglect the light God gives them and instead lead His people astray through falsehood and deception. On that course they are driven onward and cannot keep their footing, but fall therein under judgment. The slippery, dark way is thus the certain end of misleading leadership that substitutes human invention for divine truth.

God's patience toward such leaders only delays punishment and does not cancel it. He will visit their transgression with evil brought upon them in the year of their visitation. That visitation comes when their cases are brought before Him for judgment.
