Jeremiah 23:36

And the burden of the LORD shall ye mention no more: for every man’s word shall be his burden; for ye have perverted the words of the living God, of the LORD of hosts our God.

The command bars calling any human message the burden of the Lord, for what a man utters on his own is his own burden and not a message from the Lord. False prophets must no longer attach that divine title to their own word, since their speaking falsely in God's name has made their own words a burden to them. Each person's own word becomes his burden precisely because it is his own and not the Lord's.

The reason given is that such speakers have perverted the words of the living God, the LORD of hosts our God. They have twisted those living words, and therefore their utterance stands exposed as perversion rather than revelation. In its setting these prophets are linked with profaning the sanctuary, doing violence to God's law, leading His people astray, and strengthening the wicked. The passage belongs to Jeremiah 22-39, prophecies that are not placed in chronological order, with chapter 23 coming in time after chapters 20 and 22 and before chapter 25. There it stands among Messianic prophecies that look through the restoration from Babylon to the more glorious restoration under Christ Jesus the Lord.
