Jeremiah 23:38

But since ye say, The burden of the LORD; therefore thus saith the LORD; Because ye say this word, The burden of the LORD, and I have sent unto you, saying, Ye shall not say, The burden of the LORD;

The verse belongs to the warnings to the Jews found in Jeremiah 12 to 24. It records God forbidding the people to call a prophetic message the burden of the Lord. Because they kept using that expression after being told not to, God responds with rebuke and announces judgment for their disobedience.

In context the verse concerns false prophets who profane the sanctuary, violate God's law, despise God, lead His people astray, and strengthen the wicked. The surrounding chapter shows those false prophets offering peace and assurance when danger is near. The verse is a warning and appeal from God joined to assurances of the heavenly Father's kindness and everlasting love. It is peculiarly applicable to the present day.
