Jeremiah 23:9
Mine heart within me is broken because of the prophets; all my bones shake; I am like a drunken man, and like a man whom wine hath overcome, because of the LORD, and because of the words of his holiness. Mine heart within me is broken because of the prophets; all my bones shake; I am like a drunken man, and like a man whom wine hath overcome, because of the LORD, and because of the words of his holiness.
The chapter stands after chapters 20 and 22 and before chapter 25 in chronological order, although the prophecies after chapter 20 are not arranged chronologically because the manuscript rolls were gathered into one book. That displacement changes nothing in its teaching, and the chapter itself shows its own place in time. The verse belongs to God's witness and reckoning against Judah's false prophets and against the sins that brought sorrow and suffering upon Judah.
Those prophets were treacherous and profane, breaking God's law, despising Him, leading His people astray, and strengthening the hands of the wicked. They spoke from their own hearts, having neither seen nor received any message from God. Their cry has ever been one of peace and assurance in time of danger. Jeremiah was deeply distressed over the corruption of the people, and especially over the false prophets, with a broken heart and a trembling frame like a drunken man overcome with wine.
His anguish came because of the Lord and because of the words of His holiness which he proclaimed, as he beheld a land full of sin whose prophets dealt wickedly. The chapter is one of the Messianic prophecies that look through the restoration from Babylon to the more glorious restoration under Christ Jesus the Lord.
