Jeremiah 25:18
To wit, Jerusalem, and the cities of Judah, and the kings thereof, and the princes thereof, to make them a desolation, an astonishment, an hissing, and a curse; as it is this day; To wit, Jerusalem, and the cities of Judah, and the kings thereof, and the princes thereof, to make them a desolation, an astonishment, an hissing, and a curse; as it is this day;
Jerusalem, together with the cities of Judah and their kings and princes, are named as those to be made a desolation and ruin, an astonishment, a hissing or scorn, and a curse. This means that Jerusalem, the cities of Judah and their kings are the first to drink the cup filled with the wine of divine wrath, draining the cup of woe. The cup illustrates the meaning of the sentence of doom already pronounced upon them, whose awful import could scarcely be understood. After Judah, others drink the same cup in turn until God's purpose is fulfilled. This desolation is the seventy years of captivity foretold by Jeremiah, which Daniel later understood from this prophecy was nearing its end.
