Jeremiah 25:2

The which Jeremiah the prophet spake unto all the people of Judah, and to all the inhabitants of Jerusalem, saying,

The word was spoken publicly to all the people of Judah and to all the inhabitants of Jerusalem in the fourth year of Jehoiakim, very soon after the beginning of the Babylonian captivity. From the thirteenth year of Josiah, for more than twenty years, Jeremiah had been warning them of God's desire to save them, but they had despised and rejected his messages. The warning of coming judgment was plain testimony given to the nation in mercy before it came to pass.

The message was written in a book declaring seventy years to be accomplished in the desolations of Jerusalem and the sure promise of the return and restoration of Israel. More than sixty years after it was written, in the first year of Darius the Mede, Daniel prayerfully studied these records, knew well the circumstances in which they were given, and understood from them the number of the years, seeing that the seventy years of captivity were nearing their close while he was praying for Jerusalem and its desolate sanctuary. He was perplexed over how the seventy years of captivity related to the twenty-three hundred years to elapse before the cleansing of the sanctuary.
