Jeremiah 25:20
And all the mingled people, and all the kings of the land of Uz, and all the kings of the land of the Philistines, and Ashkelon, and Azzah, and Ekron, and the remnant of Ashdod, And all the mingled people, and all the kings of the land of Uz, and all the kings of the land of the Philistines, and Ashkelon, and Azzah, and Ekron, and the remnant of Ashdod,
The verse belongs to the prophecy of the seventy years of captivity that Daniel was studying as the period drew near its close. It names some of the many other nations of the earth that must drink the cup filled with the wine of divine wrath. The cup means the fate pronounced in the sentence of doom, a cup of woe.
Jerusalem and the cities of Judah and their kings drink first, then Pharaoh king of Egypt with his servants and princes and all his people, then the mingled people and the other kingdoms named in the verse, continuing until God's purpose is fulfilled. The likeness of draining the cup was commanded because the multitudes who heard the clearly pronounced doom could scarcely grasp its awful import, and a deeper impression needed to be made.
