Jeremiah Offers the Cup of Wine to the Nationsby emmanuel_higgins

Jeremiah 25:22

And all the kings of Tyrus, and all the kings of Zidon, and the kings of the isles which are beyond the sea,

The prophecies of Jeremiah 25 were given very soon after the beginning of the Babylonian captivity. That chapter plainly declares seventy years as the number of the years for the desolations of Jerusalem and gives the sure promise that the exiles will return. Together with chapters 27 through 31, it was prayerfully studied in the first year of Darius the Mede, more than sixty years after it was written. The promise of the return was known to be sure, yet the relation of the seventy years of captivity to the twenty-three hundred years to pass before the cleansing of the sanctuary was not understood.

The kings of Tyre, the kings of Sidon, and the kings of the distant isles beyond the sea are listed as part of the many nations that must drink the cup holding the wine of divine anger. The cup illustrates the meaning of the pronounced sentence of doom that the multitudes could scarcely understand. Jerusalem and the cities of Judah with their kings drink first, then Pharaoh king of Egypt with his servants and princes and people, and then many other nations of earth including these kings, until God's purpose is fulfilled.
