Jeremiah 25:27
Therefore thou shalt say unto them, Thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel; Drink ye, and be drunken, and spue, and fall, and rise no more, because of the sword which I will send among you. Therefore thou shalt say unto them, Thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel; Drink ye, and be drunken, and spue, and fall, and rise no more, because of the sword which I will send among you.
The command to drink, to become drunken, to vomit and to fall without rising again portrays God's sentence of doom as the draining of a cup filled with the wine of divine wrath. That cup of woe is first given to Jerusalem, with the cities of Judah and their kings. Then Pharaoh king of Egypt drinks from it with his servants and his princes and all his people. Then many other nations of the earth drink in turn, until God's purpose is fulfilled.
The prophecy to which this command belongs is the one by which Daniel understood that Israel's seventy years of captivity were nearing their close. That approaching close formed the setting for his prayer concerning Jerusalem and its ruined sanctuary.
