Jeremiah 25:29
For, lo, I begin to bring evil on the city which is called by my name, and should ye be utterly unpunished? Ye shall not be unpunished: for I will call for a sword upon all the inhabitants of the earth, saith the LORD of hosts. For, lo, I begin to bring evil on the city which is called by my name, and should ye be utterly unpunished? Ye shall not be unpunished: for I will call for a sword upon all the inhabitants of the earth, saith the LORD of hosts.
Divine punishment begins with the city called by God's name and then extends to all the inhabitants of the earth, so that none go unpunished. For the kingdom of Judah this announced that the day of doom was fast approaching, when hope of averting the severest judgments could no longer be offered and punishment was certain. Its meaning is illustrated by a cup filled with the wine of divine wrath that must be drained, first by Jerusalem and the cities of Judah with their kings, and then by Pharaoh king of Egypt with his servants, princes and people and by many other nations until God's purpose is fulfilled. The warning was met by the impenitent with mocking derision, claiming that the days were prolonged and every vision had failed.
The verse belongs to the prophecy of the seventy years of Jerusalem's desolation and captivity that Daniel studied to understand the promised restoration of the exiles. Daniel understood those seventy years to be nearing their close in the first year of Darius, in 538 B.C. Daniel therefore supposed that the 2300 days ended with Israel's servitude and prayed for God to restore favor to Jerusalem's desolate sanctuary.
