Jeremiah 25:32
Thus saith the LORD of hosts, Behold, evil shall go forth from nation to nation, and a great whirlwind shall be raised up from the coasts of the earth. Thus saith the LORD of hosts, Behold, evil shall go forth from nation to nation, and a great whirlwind shall be raised up from the coasts of the earth.
The verse belongs to the prophecies of the twenty-fifth chapter of Jeremiah given very soon after the beginning of the Babylonian captivity, containing the plain promise that God would accomplish seventy years in the desolations of Jerusalem and then restore Israel. More than sixty years after they were written, in the first year of Darius the Mede, Daniel prayerfully studied these prophecies together with the letters of Jeremiah 27-29 and the restoration book of Jeremiah 30-31, and understood from them the number of the years. Daniel already knew the promise of return was sure, yet he could not understand how the seventy years of captivity related to the twenty-three hundred years to elapse before the cleansing of the sanctuary shown to him in the third year of Belshazzar.
The evil going forth from nation to nation is the swift-coming judgment of God likened to draining a cup filled with the wine of divine wrath. Jerusalem and the cities of Judah and their kings are among the first to drink of this cup of woe, then Pharaoh king of Egypt with his servants and princes and people and many other nations of earth drink the same cup until God's purpose is fulfilled. The awful import of this doom is further illustrated by dashing to pieces a potter's earthen bottle in the valley of the son of Hinnom, meaning God will break this people and this city as one breaks a potter's vessel that cannot be made whole again. The evil pronounced is brought upon the city and upon all her towns because they have hardened their necks so as not to hear God's words.
The evil spreading from nation to nation and the great whirlwind raised from the ends of the earth describe the Lord's judgment and punishment reaching the nations as part of His controversy with the nations and His punishment of opposing powers. The surrounding verses show the Lord bringing this judgment on the nations, with the wicked slain and widespread death across the earth. After all people have chosen sides for Christ and His commandments or for apostasy, God will punish every opposing power.
