Jeremiah 26:1

In the beginning of the reign of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah king of Judah came this word from the LORD, saying,

The time marked out is the beginning of the reign of Jehoiakim, the son of Josiah, king of Judah. It came after the death of Josiah, when Jehoiakim succeeded Jehoahaz upon the throne.

The verse introduces a word from the Lord that Jeremiah was commanded to deliver publicly, standing in the court of the temple. He was to speak the whole message and withhold nothing of it. That message called Judah to hear the words of the covenant, the plain precepts of Jehovah recorded in Scripture, and to do them.

It was given even though there was little hope of saving Judah from destruction and captivity. Yet it still gave the people an opportunity to turn from sin. At the same time it encouraged the faithful to persevere.
