Jeremiah 26:11

Then spake the priests and the prophets unto the princes and to all the people, saying, This man is worthy to die; for he hath prophesied against this city, as ye have heard with your ears.

When the priests and prophets moved against Jeremiah, the princes hurried from the king's palace to the temple to learn the truth for themselves about his words. The priests and the prophets, who were false prophets, then formally accused Jeremiah before the princes of Judah and all the people and demanded that he die. The charge was that he had prophesied judgment against Jerusalem, against this city, as they had heard with their own ears.

The charge treated his faithful warning as a crime and as a threat to the city. They pressed this accusation because they could not endure the exposure of their wickedness and opposed the truths that exposed it. Jeremiah stood boldly before princes and people instead of being intimidated, and while standing firm he called the people to amend their ways and obey God.

His courage in delivering the solemn warning commanded respect and turned the princes in his favor, so they reasoned with the priests and false prophets against their extreme measures and their words produced a reaction in the people. Thus God raised up defenders for His servant, whereas if he had been intimidated his message would have been without effect and he would have lost his life.
