Jeremiah 26:5
To hearken to the words of my servants the prophets, whom I sent unto you, both rising up early, and sending them, but ye have not hearkened; To hearken to the words of my servants the prophets, whom I sent unto you, both rising up early, and sending them, but ye have not hearkened;
God repeatedly sent His servants the prophets to warn Judah, rising early to send them. That sending was a persistent appeal to listen, urging them again and again to heed the warning. It was a merciful opportunity to repent and turn from evil before judgment fell.
Judah refused to listen and heed the prophets who were sent. That refusal was disobedience to God's law, since heeding the prophets was part of walking in His law. Honoring religious forms or claiming regard for God's law gives no protection to those who refuse correction, persist in sin, and neglect to repent and obey.
Continued rejection of that call would bring the announced judgment that the temple would become like Shiloh and Jerusalem a curse among the nations. The reference to Shiloh recalled the disaster when Eli's sons were killed, Eli died, the ark was captured, and thirty thousand Israelites were slain, showing what follows when sin is treated lightly and left unchecked. God's warnings through His chosen servants must not be disregarded, and those responsible for the church must faithfully confront wrong.
