Jeremiah 27:16
Also I spake to the priests and to all this people, saying, Thus saith the LORD; Hearken not to the words of your prophets that prophesy unto you, saying, Behold, the vessels of the LORD’s house shall now shortly be brought again from Babylon: for they prophesy a lie unto you.
God's message came through Jeremiah to Judah's priests and to all the people. It commanded them not to listen to the words of their prophets who were confidently promising that the vessels taken from the Lord's house would now shortly be brought back again from Babylon. Those prophets were prophesying a lie, for their reassuring promise contradicted God's true prophecy and warning of continued captivity and of return only afterward. The vessels already carried away were, like the captives, to remain in Babylon until the seventy years of captivity and servitude had ended, so the promise of their swift return was false and not to be trusted.
The warning belonged to Jeremiah's controversy with the false prophets during the Babylonian captivity. It guarded against assurances that could turn the people away from their proper course. That course was to avoid conflict with Babylon and to maintain friendly relations with its rulers.
