Jeremiah 28:11
And Hananiah spake in the presence of all the people, saying, Thus saith the LORD; Even so will I break the yoke of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon from the neck of all nations within the space of two full years. And the prophet Jeremiah went his way.
Hananiah spoke in the presence of all the people as if speaking for the Lord, declaring that within two full years God would break the yoke of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon from the neck of all nations. He illustrated that promise of swift deliverance by breaking the wooden yoke from Jeremiah's neck. The prophet Jeremiah then went his way, withdrawing from the confrontation without answering Hananiah's public challenge after delivering his message to the people.
His claim directly contradicted God's true message through Jeremiah that Judah and the surrounding nations must submit to Babylon for the appointed time. It was a false prophecy falsely claiming divine authority and encouraging the people to trust a lie. It offered reassuring predictions of prosperity and swift deliverance to win favor and quiet fears, in contrast to Jeremiah's severe warnings that exposed their sin and the coming punishment.
That reassurance led the people to resist Jeremiah's counsel and rebel against God, and it intensified their hostility toward Jeremiah. God did not leave the false prophecy unanswered but sent Jeremiah back with the message that Hananiah had lied in the Lord's name. Resistance to the warning would bring harsher bondage under an iron yoke, and God exposed Hananiah's lie and judged him for leading the people into rebellion.
