Jeremiah 28:12

Then the word of the LORD came unto Jeremiah the prophet, after that Hananiah the prophet had broken the yoke from off the neck of the prophet Jeremiah, saying,

This verse belongs to the controversy between Jeremiah and the false prophets, preserved together with letters to the captives in Babylon and to the authorities in Jerusalem in Jeremiah 27-29. It marks the moment when the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah after Hananiah had broken the wooden yoke from off Jeremiah's neck. God sent Jeremiah back to declare that the broken wooden yokes would be replaced with yokes of iron, signifying a harsher rule by Babylon.

Hananiah had not been sent by the Lord, yet by opposing severe warnings and promising prosperity he caused the people to trust in a lie and to resist the true prophet's counsel. Because he taught rebellion against the Lord he would die that same year, and his death in the seventh month fulfilled Jeremiah's prophecy and confirmed the truth of the Lord's message. To conceal sin and to promise peace when God has declared judgment is rebellion against God's word.
