Jeremiah 28:16

Therefore thus saith the LORD; Behold, I will cast thee from off the face of the earth: this year thou shalt die, because thou hast taught rebellion against the LORD.

The verse is God's definite sentence on Hananiah that He would cast him from off the face of the earth by causing him to die in that same year. Teaching rebellion against the Lord meant falsely claiming to speak in the Lord's name and for Him. Hananiah's teaching led the people to trust a lie and to rebel against the Lord's message.

He did this by falsely promising prosperity and by condemning Jeremiah's warnings, which helped the people resist the true prophet's counsel. In its setting, this opposition rejected God's counsel through Jeremiah that the people should submit to Babylon. The death sentence was announced in the fifth month and was fulfilled when Hananiah died in the seventh month of that year.

His death confirmed that Jeremiah's warning was true and showed that the Lord had not sent Hananiah. In the same setting, the sentence against the false prophets Ahab and Zedekiah was fulfilled when they were handed over to the king of Babylon and killed. The verse warns that opposing God's messengers and softening their warnings against sin is rebellion against God's word.
