Jeremiah 28:5
Then the prophet Jeremiah said unto the prophet Hananiah in the presence of the priests, and in the presence of all the people that stood in the house of the LORD, Then the prophet Jeremiah said unto the prophet Hananiah in the presence of the priests, and in the presence of all the people that stood in the house of the LORD,
Jeremiah's reply to Hananiah was given in the house of the Lord, in the temple, before the priests and all the people gathered and assembled there. The exchange belonged to the recorded controversy between the true and false prophets concerning the exiles. Hananiah opposed Jeremiah's severe warnings with a contrary, opposing prophecy promising peace and prosperity.
In that public setting Jeremiah expressed the wish that Hananiah's promise of peace would come true, while insisting that only its fulfillment would show whether the Lord had truly sent him. Hananiah condemned Jeremiah for troubling the people. His reassuring message encouraged resistance to Jeremiah's counsel, to the counsel of the true prophet.
