Jeremiah 29:4
Thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel, unto all that are carried away captives, whom I have caused to be carried away from Jerusalem unto Babylon; Thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel, unto all that are carried away captives, whom I have caused to be carried away from Jerusalem unto Babylon;
The chapter belongs to letters sent soon after the Babylonian captivity began, addressed to the Hebrew exiles. Those addressed are identified as all who were carried away from Jerusalem to Babylon, and it is declared that the Lord Himself caused them to be carried away. Its setting includes conflict between Jeremiah and false prophets.
Its message called the exiles to accept their situation rather than expect immediate deliverance, to live peacefully among their captors, and to reject false promises of a speedy return. It stands with the testimony that the captivity would last seventy years, after which the exiles would be delivered and return to Jerusalem. Daniel later studied these prophecies and understood the stated period of Jerusalem's desolation.
