Jeremiah 3:25
We lie down in our shame, and our confusion covereth us: for we have sinned against the LORD our God, we and our fathers, from our youth even unto this day, and have not obeyed the voice of the LORD our God. We lie down in our shame, and our confusion covereth us: for we have sinned against the LORD our God, we and our fathers, from our youth even unto this day, and have not obeyed the voice of the LORD our God.
The verse supplies the humble confession provided for backsliding Judah to speak and pray when turning back to God. It gives the very words to be used in that return, a confession to be prayed in shame and confusion. The confession is to lie down in shame with confusion covering them, acknowledging that sin has brought that shame and confusion. It admits that they and their fathers, their ancestors, have sinned against the Lord their God and disobeyed Him persistently, from their youth, from youth even to that day, to the present, and have not obeyed His voice.
That confession belongs to returning to God and not to trusting in the hills or the mountains for salvation, for salvation is in the Lord. Outward cleansing is not enough without transformed hearts. This loyal turning of the heart to God is the only way to escape fatal backsliding and to hope for divine favor and prosperity.
