Jeremiah 31:10
Hear the word of the LORD, O ye nations, and declare it in the isles afar off, and say, He that scattered Israel will gather him, and keep him, as a shepherd doth his flock. Hear the word of the LORD, O ye nations, and declare it in the isles afar off, and say, He that scattered Israel will gather him, and keep him, as a shepherd doth his flock.
The word of the Lord concerning Israel is to be heard by the nations and proclaimed in the distant isles. He who scattered Israel will gather him again and keep him as a shepherd keeps his flock. The promise to gather and restore Israel after scattering was certain and belongs to the prophecies of the restoration of the captives to their homeland. The scattering in exile as punishment was meant to teach obedience, not to abandon Israel.
The Lord redeemed Jacob and ransomed him from one stronger than he, redeeming Israel from stronger enemies and turning apparent defeat into deliverance. The gathering belongs to the great plan of redemption that embraces the whole world. The promise of gathering belongs to Israel's restoration and is linked with renewing the covenant with Israel and Judah by writing the law in their hearts, forgiving iniquity, and remembering sin no more.
The gathered ones will come and sing in the height of Zion and flow together to the goodness of the Lord for wheat and wine and oil and the young of the flock and herd, bringing joy, comfort, and abundance as their soul becomes like a watered garden and they sorrow no more. Corn and wine are symbols of grace and plenty.
