Jeremiah 32:23

And they came in, and possessed it; but they obeyed not thy voice, neither walked in thy law; they have done nothing of all that thou commandedst them to do: therefore thou hast caused all this evil to come upon them:

God had brought Israel out of Egypt with signs and wonders and given them the land He had sworn and promised to their fathers, a land flowing with milk and honey, which they entered and possessed. Once in possession they did not obey His voice, did not walk in His law, and did nothing of all that He had commanded them to do. The calamity that fell upon them was caused by God Himself as the consequence of that disobedience.

The evil was the imminent destruction of Jerusalem by the Chaldeans by sword and famine and pestilence, the burning of its gates and palaces, and the carrying of its inhabitants captive out of all the countries where He had driven them in anger and wrath. Yet this chastisement did not end His eternal purpose for Israel, for just as He brought the great evil upon them so He would bring upon them all the good He had promised. He would gather them again and cause them to dwell safely, give them one heart to fear Him, make an everlasting covenant to do them good, plant them in the land, and cause fields to be bought again and captivity to return.
