Jeremiah 32:28
Therefore thus saith the LORD; Behold, I will give this city into the hand of the Chaldeans, and into the hand of Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon, and he shall take it: Therefore thus saith the LORD; Behold, I will give this city into the hand of the Chaldeans, and into the hand of Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon, and he shall take it:
The Lord would give this city, Jerusalem, into the hand of the Chaldeans and into the hand of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, and he would take and capture it. Nebuchadnezzar was appointed as the rod of God's anger to carry out God's purpose against Jerusalem. The prophecy was spoken near the end of Jeremiah's work in Judah and falls within the history of the two years before Jerusalem's fall, for although the book is not arranged chronologically, the chapter's setting indicates its chronology.
The giving followed repeated rebellion: Jehoiakim served Nebuchadnezzar three years then rebelled and was carried to Babylon, Jehoiachin was made king then rebelled and was carried to Babylon with his court and 10,000 of the people, and Zedekiah was made king in Jerusalem and served eight years then rebelled. In the ninth year of Zedekiah Nebuchadnezzar laid siege to Jerusalem, and after a siege of a year and a half the city was taken, the temple and all the great men's houses were burned with fire, the walls of Jerusalem were broken down round about, and Zedekiah with many more of the people was carried to Babylon. Gedaliah was made governor over the very few poor people left in the land, and after his murder all the people fled to Egypt for fear of the Chaldeans. Jeremiah's prophecies here move from the restoration after Babylon toward the greater restoration under Christ.
