Jeremiah 33:20
Thus saith the LORD; If ye can break my covenant of the day, and my covenant of the night, and that there should not be day and night in their season; Thus saith the LORD; If ye can break my covenant of the day, and my covenant of the night, and that there should not be day and night in their season;
The Hebrew word for night in the verse, lah-yil, denotes nighttime rather than the light part of the day. The verse belongs to chapters 32 to 45 of Jeremiah, which give the history of the two years before the fall of Jerusalem. It stands late in Jeremiah's work in Judah, following chapter 32 and coming before chapters 38 and 39, though the prophecies are not placed in chronological order.
God's covenant governing the regular succession of day and night is unbreakable by human power, and the recurrence of day and night illustrates how certain God's word and promises are. It is one of the Messianic prophecies that look through the restoration from Babylon to the more glorious restoration under Christ Jesus our Lord. It belongs to prophecies that look toward restoration under Christ, in which faithful members of literal Israel served as a type of Israel under the new covenant.
The covenant with Israel extends to the whole house of Jacob and all the seed included in its promised restoration, not merely to a portion of the people or to natural descendants alone, but to those counted as the children of promise, and its fulfillment includes the resurrection and the restoration of Israel through Jesus. The prophecy is about Israel's gathering and restoration, pointing to the time when God gives Israel a new spirit and brings them into the covenant land, and this restoration takes place at the beginning of the day of the Lord, before the resurrection of the righteous. It is one of the Old Testament prophecies that describes the desolation of the earth during the millennium, after all wicked men have been destroyed at the second advent of Christ and the righteous dead have been raised and the living righteous changed to immortality and have ascended with their Lord to the eternal city to reign with Him in the judgment of the wicked for a thousand years.
The covenant of day and night is a measure of faithfulness and constancy, and the Voice calling people away from sin and death is more faithful still, leading them to righteousness, truth, freedom, and happiness.
