Jeremiah 34:2

Thus saith the LORD, the God of Israel; Go and speak to Zedekiah king of Judah, and tell him, Thus saith the LORD; Behold, I will give this city into the hand of the king of Babylon, and he shall burn it with fire:

This word belongs to the history of the two years before Jerusalem fell. In chronological order it stands late in Jeremiah's work in Judah, after Jeremiah 21 and before Jeremiah 37. In the proposed chronological sequence it falls after the events of chapters 21 and 28 and before those of chapters 37 and 32. Jeremiah's prophecies are not placed in chronological order because of the way the manuscript rolls were gathered together in one book, but this displacement makes no change in the teaching. The verse belongs to Jeremiah 34, to be read with Jeremiah 35-36, and the chapter itself clearly indicates its chronology.

The verse declares that the Lord would give Jerusalem into the hand of the king of Babylon to be burned with fire, and foretells that Zedekiah would be taken to Babylon. The prediction that Zedekiah would meet and speak with the Babylonian king was fulfilled at Riblah, where Zedekiah saw Nebuchadnezzar before his eyes were put out, so that he was afterward brought to Babylon without seeing the city.

The verse belongs to the account of Zedekiah's response to God's messages, including the release of oppressed servants, while the chapters that follow recount the final warning and Zedekiah's refusal to obey. The readings from Jeremiah 22 to Jeremiah 39 that include this verse carry Messianic prophecies forward through the restoration from Babylon to the more glorious restoration under Christ Jesus the Lord.
