Jeremiah 34:21
And Zedekiah king of Judah and his princes will I give into the hand of their enemies, and into the hand of them that seek their life, and into the hand of the king of Babylon’s army, which are gone up from you. And Zedekiah king of Judah and his princes will I give into the hand of their enemies, and into the hand of them that seek their life, and into the hand of the king of Babylon’s army, which are gone up from you.
Jeremiah 34:21 belongs to Jeremiah's record of events in Judah during the reign of Zedekiah in the final crisis, the two years before Jerusalem fell. Within a suggested chronological sequence it follows Jeremiah 21 and precedes Jeremiah 37. Its immediate setting is Zedekiah's covenant to release servants and the judgment that followed failure to obey God. It is part of God's indictment against Judah before its destruction by Nebuchadnezzar, in which the people's oppression and enslavement of others were among the injustices that brought judgment.
The verse foretells that Zedekiah king of Judah and his princes or officials would be given into the hand of their enemies, into the hand of those seeking their lives, and into the hand of the king of Babylon's army. Here "life" renders the Hebrew word nephesh. The Babylonian army is the force that had gone up from Jerusalem, or withdrawn from it. Refusing God's instruction brought the threatened judgment, for Zedekiah and the city ultimately came under the power of Babylon's king and army. That handing over of the king and his princes to their enemies and to the Babylonian army was punishment for rejecting God's commands against slavery and oppression, fulfilled when Nebuchadnezzar destroyed and captured the state.
The verse also shows the destruction of all wicked men at the second advent of Christ. That destruction leaves the earth desolate during the thousand years. Meanwhile the resurrected and changed immortal righteous ascend to the eternal city and reign with Christ in the judgment of the wicked.
