Jeremiah 34:4

Yet hear the word of the LORD, O Zedekiah king of Judah; Thus saith the LORD of thee, Thou shalt not die by the sword:

The promise belongs to the reign of Zedekiah king of Judah, and in chronological order it stands after Jeremiah 21 and before Jeremiah 37, although it appears earlier in the book's arrangement. Jeremiah 22-39 are not placed in chronological order, but each chapter nearly always clearly indicates its own chronology. It falls within the history of the two years before the fall of Jerusalem.

In its surrounding events Zedekiah undertook to release servants and others who were oppressed, as required by the law given through Moses. When fear of the people tested his obedience he later refused the prophet's counsel. As part of the testimonies to Zedekiah, it is to be studied for the lesson it gives about responding to God's word.

Together with the following verses through verse 7, it is grouped with Jeremiah's prophecies of the same events Ezekiel describes. Those prophecies point to the time when Israel is gathered and delivered and receives God's Spirit. That gathering and deliverance stands just before the resurrection of the just.
