Jeremiah 35:3

Then I took Jaazaniah the son of Jeremiah, the son of Habaziniah, and his brethren, and all his sons, and the whole house of the Rechabites;

Jeremiah obeyed God's command to take Jaazaniah the son of Jeremiah the son of Habaziniah, together with his brethren and all his sons and the whole house of the Rechabites, into the house of the Lord. Once they were gathered there, wine was set before the Rechabites at God's command, and they refused it because their ancestor Jonadab had commanded them and their descendants not to drink wine. In that refusal they kept the special instruction charged upon them by their fathers, obeying parental authority in frugality and temperance in all things and simplicity of manner. That temperate, simple course was a far better portion for them in this life than the ways of the worldling.

The gathering was the Lord's test to contrast the obedience of the Rechabites with the disobedience of the Jews of Judah in refusing to heed God's warnings. For years God had been employing a variety of means to guard His people against evils that would make it difficult and even impossible for them to carry on the appointed work He had specified they should do. To those in Judah He had given special light and privileges, yet they would not heed.

God commended and honored such obedience as the Rechabites showed, and obedience brings blessing. Persistent disregard of divine counsel leads to judgment.
