When Michaiah the son of Gemariah, the son of Shaphan, had heard out of the book all the words of the LORD,
Michaiah was the son of Gemariah, the son of Shaphan, and he heard out of the book all the words of the Lord when Baruch read the roll written from Jeremiah's mouth in the Lord's house upon the fasting day in the ears of the people and of all Judah that came out of their cities. After hearing, he went down into the king's house into the scribe's chamber where all the princes sat and declared to them all the words he had heard when Baruch read the book in the ears of the people. That hearing and reporting carried the warning to the princes and then to King Jehoiakim.
The scroll carried reproofs to ancient Israel that were not received, and it was given to Baruch to read to the king. Jehoiakim rejected the message and cut the roll with a penknife and burned it in the fire. The message could not be destroyed by burning, but was written again with more added, and the messages of warning have been repeated as of old. Jehoiakim's act is to be studied because some in recent years have virtually repeated his burning of the messages of the Spirit of God.
