Jeremiah 36:5

And Jeremiah commanded Baruch, saying, I am shut up; I cannot go into the house of the LORD:

Jeremiah was shut up and could not go into the house of the Lord himself, so he commanded Baruch to go there in his place. Baruch had written the roll from Jeremiah's mouth, and was to read from it all the words of the Lord in the ears of the people in the Lord's house upon the fasting day and in the ears of all Judah coming out of their cities. The writing carried out God's direction to record all His words against Israel and Judah and all the nations from the days of Josiah to that day.

Its purpose was that the house of Judah might hear all the evil purposed against them, present their supplication before the Lord, and return every one from his evil way because great is the anger and fury pronounced against them, so that God might forgive their iniquity and sin. Baruch did according to all that Jeremiah commanded him. The roll conveyed the Lord's reproofs to ancient Israel to be read to the king, but the message was not received and was rejected and burned by King Jehoiakim.

God had the rejected message written again with further words added, showing that destroying or refusing God's message does not silence it but brings its warning and judgment more fully to light. The chapter is presented as a warning to Battle Creek, with events in Jeremiah's day including resistance to the Lord's message having parallels in a later day. The sending of the written warning belongs to the acts of Jehoiakim's time that God's people are to study, for the warning messages rejected and burned then are repeated now when men turn from the right way.
