Jeremiah 37:15

Wherefore the princes were wroth with Jeremiah, and smote him, and put him in prison in the house of Jonathan the scribe: for they had made that the prison.

The princes became angry with Jeremiah, struck and beat him, and put him in prison. The prison was the house of Jonathan the scribe, which had been made and turned into a prison. His punishment followed a false accusation that he was deserting to the Babylonians and joining them, an accusation the princes believed. He denied the charge, which arose because he had repeatedly urged Judah and its people to submit to Babylon.

The rulers hated him for foretelling Jerusalem's calamity and punished him for giving a warning they did not want to hear. His suffering came because he obeyed the Lord's word and faithfully delivered it. Opposition to God's word can become anger and persecution against the faithful messenger, and that same spirit of resistance to reproof still persists.
