Now Jeremiah came in and went out among the people: for they had not put him into prison.
Jeremiah 37:4 belongs to a brief pause in the siege of Jerusalem, when the Chaldean army drew off from the city because an Egyptian force advanced to rescue it and they turned aside to meet and hold that threat back. In that interval Jeremiah was still at liberty, moving freely in and out among the people, for he had not yet been shut up in prison. The lifting of the pressure revived King Zedekiah's hope for deliverance. Out of that hope he sent a messenger to Jeremiah with a request that the prophet pray to God on behalf of the Hebrew nation.
