Jeremiah 38:10
Then the king commanded Ebed-melech the Ethiopian, saying, Take from hence thirty men with thee, and take up Jeremiah the prophet out of the dungeon, before he die. Then the king commanded Ebed-melech the Ethiopian, saying, Take from hence thirty men with thee, and take up Jeremiah the prophet out of the dungeon, before he die.
Jeremiah was thrown into the pit for his faithful integrity in prophesying calamity. The enraged rulers demanded his death, charging that by his words of coming calamity he weakened the people and proved himself an enemy to the nation. The king knew those charges were false, yet he weakly surrendered the prophet into their hands to please men in high position.
The dungeon was Malchiah's dungeon in the court of the prison, a dark pit with no water but mire and mud in which he sank. Friends pleaded with the king on Jeremiah's behalf, and Ebed-melech's appeal moved him to act. The king then commanded Ebed-melech to take thirty men with him and lift Jeremiah out of the dungeon before he died.
Jeremiah was brought out alive and returned to the court of the prison, so that his cause found favor even with princes. God Himself raised up friends and worked the deliverance, showing He had not forgotten or forsaken Jeremiah. The rescue is an example of His care for His faithful people in times of danger and suffering.
