Jeremiah Is Lowered into the Cistern as Jerusalem Burnsby emmanuel_higgins

Jeremiah 38:13

So they drew up Jeremiah with cords, and took him up out of the dungeon: and Jeremiah remained in the court of the prison.

Jeremiah was cast into the pit for his faithful integrity. King Zedekiah was too fearful and weak to obey God or to stand against his nobles, so he handed Jeremiah over to the enraged princes. Those princes charged him with weakening the nation by prophesying evil against it. They let him down with cords into the dungeon of Malchiah in the court of the prison, where there was no water but mire, and he sank in the mire.

Through God's providence God raised up friends for him who pleaded with the king on his behalf, and through their intervention he was drawn up with cords and ropes out of the muddy dungeon left without water. After being brought up, he was returned to remain in the court of the prison. His cause later found favor with princes.

God did not forget Jeremiah in his suffering in the dark pit. His experience assures God's people that Christ will not forsake those who belong to Him, even when they endure imprisonment, deprivation, or threats of death.
