Jeremiah 39:8

And the Chaldeans burned the king’s house, and the houses of the people, with fire, and brake down the walls of Jerusalem.

Once Jerusalem was conquered, the Chaldeans burned the king's house with fire, burned the houses of the people in the same way, and broke down the walls of the city. The burning of palace and homes together with the demolition of the defenses marked the completeness of the city's overthrow. This devastation was the fearful penalty of Zedekiah's unbelief. It was also the consequence of his choice to follow ungodly counsel instead of the word of warning given him.
