Jeremiah 39:9
Then Nebuzar-adan the captain of the guard carried away captive into Babylon the remnant of the people that remained in the city, and those that fell away, that fell to him, with the rest of the people that remained. Then Nebuzar-adan the captain of the guard carried away captive into Babylon the remnant of the people that remained in the city, and those that fell away, that fell to him, with the rest of the people that remained.
The verse describes the final Babylonian capture of Jerusalem and deportation to Babylon, when Nebuzar-adan the captain of the guard carried into exile in Babylon the remnant still left in the city together with the rest who remained. Among those taken were those who had surrendered and defected to the Babylonians, who had fallen away and fallen to him, as well as those who had deserted to them. It belongs to the account of Jerusalem's fall during the reign of Zedekiah and his capture by the Chaldeans. Zedekiah was the last king to sit on David's throne.
Jeremiah 39 falls within the section of Jeremiah that recounts events in the two years before Jerusalem fell. In chronological order the passage about Jeremiah's rescue in verses 15-18 comes before verses 1-14. The verse therefore belongs to the later part of the chapter and follows the rescue passage.
It stands in Jeremiah 39:1-14 at the close of the readings from Jeremiah 22 to Jeremiah 39. Jeremiah's prophecies after chapter 20 are not placed in chronological order, though each chapter itself nearly always makes its chronology clear. The displacement makes no change in the teaching. These chapters belong with a number of Messianic prophecies that look through the restoration from Babylon to the more glorious restoration under Christ Jesus our Lord.
