Jeremiah 4:22
For my people is foolish, they have not known me; they are sottish children, and they have none understanding: they are wise to do evil, but to do good they have no knowledge. For my people is foolish, they have not known me; they are sottish children, and they have none understanding: they are wise to do evil, but to do good they have no knowledge.
God's own people are called foolish because they do not know God and have no understanding of what is good, while they are skilled at doing evil. This knowledge of evil is altogether different from the knowledge of God, which brings heavenly wisdom and uplifts the soul. The same description fits educators who serve Satan and teach others evil.
To be wise to do evil is to be cunning in sin, using God-given abilities to plan and carry out evil purposes in a most artful way so as to succeed and still hide the sins from human eyes. Repeatedly yielding to temptation and meeting defeat again and again forms a habit of doing wrong in place of doing right. Such a course reveals a choice to live out Satan's principles and character rather than Christ's, and marks such advanced progress in wrongdoing that a person becomes skillful at evil.
Talented men of skill and knowledge who leave God out of their plans and councils become corrupt in imagination. They become wise to do what God never told them to do, wise to do evil. Apart from Christ people are merely mortal and skilled in wrongdoing but have no knowledge to do good, feeling too wise to accept Jesus.
This was the state of the antediluvian world, a long-lived race that did wonderful things with God-given ability, talents and intellect yet used them apart from God by following Satan's lead instead of connecting with the One who is infinite in wisdom. Their imagination was only evil continually and they corrupted the earth under them by triumphing in their own power and glorifying themselves. Because they remained only mortal they perished when God swept them from the earth with all their boasted knowledge, as many today who do the same will also perish. It was the condition before the destruction of the old world by the Flood, and the same unsanctified wisdom, pride and haughty spirit makes man's wisdom become foolishness when God is divorced from councils and work.
The same condition of spiritual darkness, backwardness, wickedness and corruption, clever at doing wrong while having no knowledge of doing good, was shown by the people of Nimes, whose evil is like that of Sodom and Gomorrah. It means being skilled and ready at doing wrong while ignorant, wild and undisciplined in doing good. It is like girls and boys from farms who have never been confined in school and act like wild colts, needing vigilant watching because they are quick to devise secret tricks and mischief on the sly. Every indulgence of lustful passions and every misdoing, minor or more criminal, brings upon the doer the punishment he deserves, and continual enslavement to sin fills up clouds of vengeance for such people, which will fall without mixture of mercy.
