Jeremiah 4:26

I beheld, and, lo, the fruitful place was a wilderness, and all the cities thereof were broken down at the presence of the LORD, and by his fierce anger.

The fruitful place becomes a wilderness and all its cities are broken down at the presence of the Lord and by His fierce anger. It foretells a future desolation at the day of the Lord, the great day of God, the day of God's vengeance, and the coming time of trouble and divine judgment. That devastation comes in the transition when human pride is laid low. It is the devastation that will follow when the restrained winds of strife are released and the final crisis comes upon the world.

The desolation is the condition of the earth after the second coming and return of Christ. The earth is left desolate after the saints are preserved through the final upheavals and the righteous dead are raised, the living saints are changed, and both are taken away to meet Christ. It is thereby brought back, at least in part, to the confusion and darkness of its unformed condition at creation.

In that ruined and barren state, with its cities in ruins, the earth becomes the desolate home and place of confinement for Satan and his evil angels during the thousand years. There they witness the effects of rebellion against God's law and the curse Satan caused. The land lies broken and barren while cities lie in ruins around them.
