Jeremiah 40:1
The word that came to Jeremiah from the LORD, after that Nebuzar-adan the captain of the guard had let him go from Ramah, when he had taken him being bound in chains among all that were carried away captive of Jerusalem and Judah, which were carried away captive unto Babylon.
The verse stands after Jeremiah 39:1-14 in time and opens the block of chapters 40 to 45 that follows the fall of Jerusalem. The prophecies of Jeremiah are not placed in chronological order because the manuscript rolls were gathered together into one book, which makes no change in his teaching, and the chapter itself makes its time clear. It is also reckoned to the historical account of the two years before Jerusalem's fall, recording that Jeremiah was released at Ramah by Nebuzar-adan after being taken in chains with the Judean captives bound for Babylon.
It is part of the account of the Jews left behind after Zedekiah's captivity and their later flight into Egypt. It begins a section that includes accounts of Jeremiah's personal experiences and his going into Egypt. The record from this chapter onward shows the outcome of a proud people who reject the Lord's reproof through His chosen messenger and insist on their own course.
